about

This album was a game changer for the Grand Central label, songwriting, production, beat making and A&R all came to the fore. The album was recorded in North South , Zombie and Love.net studios in Manchester and Goodfella studios in New Jersey. Andy Votel who provided three tracks on the compilation completed the artwork, a cooker was bought and painted green before Votel photographed it. Andy would go on to great success with Twisted nerve and now with Finders Keepers records. The making of this album also coincided with Tony D's first visit to the UK, an EMU SP1200 was borrowed so that Steve Christian could mix all the tracks that Tony had brought on single density floppy disk. Only Child also provides some great tracks, Justin Crawford the man behind Only Child would go on to have stellar success with the Electric Chair club nights, festivals and now restaurants and bars with partner Luke Unabomber. Mr Scruff and Mark Rae collaborated on two tracks together, recording them in Phil Kirby's studio a building which also housed Sub Subs studio. At one point after the space was used part of the building burned down and Sub Sub were reborn as The Doves. Chubby Grooves who laced the Tony D track "It's Time Two" with some extra sample goodness went on to have great success with Chopped Herring records, a label that specialises in unreleased golden era hiphop. Funky Fresh Few were all set to have a guest rap vocal from Afu Ra on this album but Mark turned up on the wrong day to meet the MC at Manchester airport. The track "Through These Veins" thus remains as an instrumental on this project. Later on the 12" release would feature Afu Ra's rap. Afu was a member of the Perverted Monks, a crew that also contained Jeru The Damaja. Jeru would go on to provide vocals on the Rae & Christian album " Northern Sulphuric Soul", you will also find the original uptempo latin track of the same name on this album, a track that predates that ground breaking album by two years.
