about

This album is very special. A project where all the energy, luck, talent, finance and timing came together as one force. The lead up to the release had seen Mark & Steve remixing some top artists such as Nightmares On Wax and The Pharcyde. Meanwhile the label Grand Central which Mark had set up in 1994, had seen steady progress with the compilation album Central Heating acting as a forewarning of what was to come. A remix of Mama Mystique led to the Curt Cazal link, a fortuitous journey in a Swedish festival van led to The Jungle Brothers link. Texas had also been remixed and returned the vocal/songwriting favour. Mark had made in roads into the New Jersey and New York HipHop scenes of the late 80's and early 90's for some years. These contacts and remix favours led to the collaboration with Jeru The Damaja. Perhaps the greatest talent on the record was found a lot closer to home with Manchester's Beverly Green aka Veba truly shining with some of the most spine tingling UK soul vocals ever delivered. Spellbound had first appeared on Central Heating and had attracted Columbia records who were flying high at the time with The Fugees. XL records led by Richard Russell also came to check the boys out hoping to sign this new wave of UK production and songwriting energy. In the end the album was released by Grand Central Records in 1998 and is considered to be a landmark of its time. It still sounds fresh to death today.
