about

This album was the first artist led album from Grand Central Records, it was released in 1997 . Tony was the spiritual godfather of the Grand Central sound, he taught the artists how to use the SP1200 and The MPC60, drum machines that formed the bedrock of the 90's American Hiphop production sound. The labels very first release was the Central J Parlay EP which was compiled from Tony's instrumental beats. This album was made in 10 days straight in Manchester's Ducie house in a studio owned by North South management, it was mixed by Steve Christian and the A & R was undertaken by Mark Rae. Low Key provides the American raps whilst the rest of the album features scratching work by Damon Savage of Funky Fresh Few, Mr Scruff and Mark 1. Veba, Buffy Brox, Spikey Tee and Lorna Harris all provided the UK vocal. The album has a very distinct sound, the key factors were Tony's brilliant sample choices, Steve Christian's excellent mixing abilities and the TAC desk which also had its own sound. One of the best stories from the recording of this album was the unusual interest Tony D took in the UK TV programme Crystal Maze, you will hear that influence in the skit Crystal Meth. The period of this recording was an exceptionally good time in the labels history, everything felt new, having hiphop producers hanging out in Chorlton and completing this whole project in 10 days was something special. Sadly Tony was killed in a car accident in April 2009. Mark's forthcoming book and album covers a lot of the shared experiences we all had with this very talented and gregarious gentleman. We miss him. RIP Anthony Depula and thank you.
